Final service for chapel before it’s turned into centre and flats

-

A WEST Wales chapel will hold its final service at the weekend before it is sold and turned into a heritage centre and flats.

Brynmyrnach Chapel in the village of Hermon, near Crymych, will mark the end of its 134-year history on Sunday, September 25, at 4pm.

The chapel elders decided to sell the chapel as repairs to the roof and walls would be a considerable sum, but they are adamant that the building needs to be retained for community and local housing needs. The chapel will be sold to a new heritage and housing trust set up by locals.

The aim of a £50,000 project will see the opening a groundfloor heritage centre at the Victorian chapel, as well as transforming a new upper floor area into two flats for local people.

The project is being promoted by Cris Tomos of Planed (Partnerships for Local Action and Networks for Enterprise and Development), who said previously: “This could be a blueprint for other communities to take on the chapels and churches that are closing.

“Local people would be the shareholders in this co-operative housing venture that will have a local letting policy allowing affordable housing for local families and couples.”

Sunday’s final service will be led by Reverend Geoffrey Eynon, with others also contributing to the service.

A warm welcome is extended to people wishing to go along, especially those with links to the chapel and the community.

Following the service there will be tea, coffee, Welshcakes and bara brith at the village hall, Canolfan Hermon.
