CARMARTHEN’S Xcel Bowl in Johnstown will be holding a weekend of events in support of cancer charity Macmillan’s Coffee Morning.

The bowling alley in Llansteffan Road already provides vital services in the community, with its profits supporting local people in need through Carmarthen Foodbank, Community Money Advice, and Xcel Furniture and Community Shop, as part of Xcel Project, a social enterprise run by Towy Community Church.

Later this month the initiative will turn its support to Macmillan Cancer

Support by becoming a part of Macmillan’s Coffee Morning on Friday, September 30, as well as hosting a family fun day on Saturday, October 1.

All money raised at both events will help Macmillan to carry out its work supporting people in Wales from the moment they are diagnosed.

Carl Jones, host team leader at Xcel Bowl, said: “Everybody knows someone who has been affected by cancer. I imagine in that almost all families, at least one person will have been affected, so it’s good to be able to help.

“The Macmillan nurses who go into people’s homes, they need support, the fundraising means they can continue to be able to help the people who need it.”

Friday, September 30, will see the bowling alley host a Macmillan Coffee Morning. Carl said: “It will start when we open at 10am and continue all day until we run out of cakes to sell. We have had local businesses donating cakes and a number of our supporters offering to make cakes too.

“It’s open to all, you don’t have to be bowling to come along.”

Cakes will be sold on a donation basis and there is no entry fee for those attending the sale.

The family fun day takes place on Saturday, October 1, between 11am and 4pm.

Entry is free with activities taking place both inside and outside the bowling centre.

Visitors will be able to meet crews from the emergency services, see a racing car, as well as taking part in games such as guess the teddy bear’s name, and guess how many sweets are in the jar, among others. Other activities include a tin can alley, lucky dip, a selfie corner, and refreshments.

Carl said: “We hope to raise more than £1,000 for Macmillan.

“We have £500 already from previous fundraising, so we hope to double that.”

Richard Pugh, head of partnerships for Macmillan Cancer Support in Wales, said: “We would like to thank Xcel Bowl and Xcel Project for supporting Macmillan’s Coffee Morning and Macmillan Cancer Support with what looks set to be two fantastic community events.”
