THE team at Burry Port Opera will be holding a Celebration Concert at Burry Port Memorial Hall, at 7pm on Saturday, October 15.
The concert will feature the celebrated Soprano from Pontarddulais, Adele O’neill, and Rhydian Jenkins, the young and upcoming tenor.
They will be supported by the accompanist Caradog Williams, the Llanelli Orchestra and the Burry Port Opera Chorus.
Burry Port Opera celebrates its 75th anniversary this year.
First established in 1947, the first full stage production to be performed was in 1951, the offering being “Blodwen”, composed in 1878 by Dr Joseph Parry, the first opera to be written entirely in the Welsh language.
Society members performed all roles until 1971, when it was decided to introduce professional artistes to the principal roles, and the priority has been to use young professionals beginning their careers.
Artistes have come from around the globe, and in 2018/2019 singers came from England, Germany, France and Italy.
Some 40-plus productions have been staged since 1951 and the last production – following which Covid-19 intervened – was in 2019, with the staging of Don Pasquale (Donizetti).
The society is the last remaining amateur group (now known informally as Burry Port Opera) in Wales to stage grand opera. Burry Port Opera is a registered charity.
Production costs average £18,000 to £20,000 and the group is making fundraising efforts, including seeking sponsors and grant opportunities.
Lt. Col. (Rtd) David Mathias, Vice Lord Lieutenant for Dyfed, has agreed to become the new President of the society.
Tickets for the concert are priced at £15 and are available from: 07955 401275, 07751 208975, or Premier Stores, Station Road, Burry Port, or at the door on the night.
Soprano Adele O’neill is a firm favourite with Welsh concert audiences.
Her singing talent was first spotted in her early years as she enjoyed various singing roles with regional societies before her singing career swept her to London, where she studied and graduated from the acclaimed Guildhall
School of Music and Drama London under the tutelage of Professor Laura Sarti, the internationally celebrated Italian mezzo-soprano.
Adele’s exciting singing career has seen her perform with a wealth of choruses, orchestras and artists with countless performances given in both the UK and internationally spanning France, Spain, Italy, Czech Republic, Poland, Hungary and Canada.
Memorable performances include Eglise Notre Dame Versailles, Bedrich Smetana Concert Hall Prague, Peterborough Cathedral, La Casa de la cultura Adalucia, Gloucester Cathedral, St. David’s Cathedral, Collegiate Concert Hall Budapest and the Krakow’s acclaimed Maritsky Church.
As an award-winning soprano, Adele has won many prestigious prizes. These include several prizes at the National Eisteddfod of Wales and the esteemed International Gold Medal Singing Competition at the internationally renowned Llangollen International Musical Eisteddfod.
Adele was also a semi-finalist in the prestigious Montserrat Caballe International singing competition in Zaragoza.
Burry Port Opera’s other guest star is tenor Rhydian Jenkins, who is currently studying MA Opera at the David Seligman Opera School at the Royal Welsh College of Music and Drama in Cardiff, under the tuition of Adrian Thompson and John Fisher.
In 2020, Rhydian played the roles of Ferrando (Cosi fan tutte) and Basilio (Le Nozze di Figaro) in the 2020 RWCMD
Winter Opera Gala, conducted by John Fisher.
Most recently, Rhydian played the roles of Don Ottavio (Don Giovanni), Count Almaviva (The Barber of Seville) and Basilio (The Marriage of Figaro) in the college’s socially distanced Spring Opera productions.
Rhydian began performing at both Wales’ Urdd and National Eisteddfods, and has achieved notable success earning over 80 national prizes.
Rhydian frequently appeares on the Welsh language channel on television shows “Heno”, “Noson Lawen” and “Dechrau Canu Dechrau Canmol”.
