Through historic river meadows

-

ON SATURDAY, Roy Downer led the Carmarthen Ramblers on a sevenmile linear walk from St Clears to Laugharne.

The walk began at the central car park in St Clears from where members followed the Pelliac Way footpath through one of St Clears’ historic river meadows.

Along the path they read interesting information boards about the local history. They turned on to another footpath which led them to the Priory Church of St Mary Magdalene, which dates from the 1100s, and then they retraced their steps to pass beneath the remains of a motte and bailey castle, and before long we joined the Wales Coast Path.

For a while this goes alongside the A4066 highway, but before long the path turned east to cross fields toward the River Taf.

The group enjoyed passing through wooded areas, as well as more farm fields, until they eventually reached Delacorse Farm. Here they admired the beautiful decorative plantings, as well as their impressive vegetable garden. The coast path now took them through woodland alongside the River Taf, passing above the boathouse where Dylan Thomas once lived. They soon descended to the coast beneath Laugharne Castle where they stopped for lunch.

After lunch they headed back inland, following a good track which eventually led them to the graveyard outside St Martin’s

Church at the edge of town. Here they stopped at the graves of Dylan and Caitlin Thomas, and Roy told them more about them and their time spent in Laugharne. The last treat was a guided tour of St Martin’s Church by two local ladies who opened the church for them and pointed out many of the interesting features inside and told them their history.
