Second-half slip proves so costly as Cwm suffer

-

CWMAMMAN United slipped up 3-1 at home against Treharris Athletic in Ardal League South West.

Cwm saw the game slip away late in the second half as Treharris mounted a strong comeback.

The Blues will feel that if they had converted some of the chances they created, it would have been a different outcome.

The hosts started well, with Charlie Davies and Ross Morgan immediately taking control of midfield, and they had the perfect foundation when Keiran Richards clinically converted the first main chance to take the lead in the ninth minute.

Cwm continued to have the upper hand throughout the first half.

Scott Jewell hit the bar from close range, with the ball coming down on to the line, but Cwm could not finish it off.

Grant Rees and Ronan Templeton were solid at the heart of defence and Treharris’s opportunities were limited.

But in the 28th minute Kai Rees was called upon to make a fine save.

Cwm were dealt a double blow just before half-time when Rees suffered an injury that hampered his movement for the rest of the match, while Davies – who was so influential in midfield – had to leave the field.

This proved to be a key turning point in the contest.

The second half saw a more open game with both sides creating chances.

On the hour mark a long ball over the Cwm defence saw Sam Cawley race through to slot it past Rees.

Things got worse in the 70th minute when a long free-kick floated to the back post allowed Matt Sellick to nip in and head home.

Cwm went frantically looking for the equaliser, with wingbacks Leon Croucher and Cory Saunders launching many attacks and Morgan prompting the side from the middle.

A Calem Rees shot drifted inches past the post, while substitute Jordan Sullivan could not get his shot away in front of goal.

There were two strong penalty shouts as Kyle Ashford was brought down, followed by a loud appeal for handball.

In the 96th minute, as Cwm peppered the visiting defence, a long high ball caused confusion and the ball fell to Haben Samson, who closed the game off by netting Treharris’s third.

Cwm travel to the Swansea University field on Friday evening to play Mumbles Rangers (7.30pm).
