ST CYNNWR WI held its September meeting at Carmarthen Bowls Club with the President Julie updating everyone on some of the interesting summer outings held. These included a visit to Onnen Studios in Llandeilo to see their beautiful metal art and a walking tour of Carmarthen with Dr Mary Thorley who highlighted landmarks of famous women and their achievements.

The speaker for the evening was Erin Roderick and she introduced the work of Orielodl (Rhyme Gallery). She explained the artwork of Rhys Padarn Jones, who is based in Pontarddulais, and the way he creates striking images using nursery rhymes, folk or traditional song lyrics, poems or quotations. Almost every painting uses the Welsh language. Erin involved everyone in colouring in some designs and proved herself a budding teacher and excellent communicator.

September’s events have entailed a very useful and educational afternoon at the St John’s Ambulance Cymru HQ in Carmarthen, under the expert tuition of Dan. He took everyone through the basics of understanding heart attacks, using cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) and using a defibrillator. On a completely different tact several members went to the afternoon tea and fashion show at The Emlyn Arms Hotel in Newcastle Emlyn. The fashions and accessories were provided by Pethau Olyv accompanied with some very entertaining commentary from the business owners, Olive and Yvonne. Their shop is based in St Clears where, along with a selection of clothing, they have a gift and card selection and tea, coffee and cakes.

St Cynnwr WI meets at 7pm on the first Tuesday of the month at Carmarthen Bowls Club and new members are always welcome.
