Confirmation that post office will reopen in weeks

-

AMMANFORD Post Office will reopen within weeks it has been confirmed.

The branch in Quay Street closed in November last year, but will relaunch on Wednesday, November 17.

The branch shut for “operational reasons” and then plans were lodged for a new use of the premises as a takeaway at the back of the building, however it was later put up for sale.

Now the branch will reopen ahead of the busy festive period.

In a statement Post Office Limited said: “The branch has been closed since November 2021 due to operational reasons.

“The appointment of a new postmaster will restore service to the community.”

The service is due to begin at 1pm on November 17.

Fiona Shanahan, Post Office Network lead, said: “We are delighted to be restoring Post Office services to Ammanford as we know how important a Post Office is to a community and the opening hours will also make it very convenient to visit.”

The opening hours will be Monday to Friday between 8am and 5pm; Saturday from 9am to 2pm.

Carmarthen East and Dinefwr MP Jonathan Edwards expressed serious concerns when the branch closed, but has welcomed the fact that Post Office services will be returning to Ammanford.

He said: “This is excellent news for the community as I know the Post Office has been sorely missed by so many of my constituents.

“The Post Office, located in the centre of town is for many a place to go to socialise as well as using the services available.

“Research shows that post offices are especially crucial for vulnerable groups, including the elderly and people on low incomes.

“With the cost-of-living crisis having an effect on so many, this community hub is going to be more important than ever.

“I would like to wish the new postmaster well and I look forward to visiting and seeing the building being used once again.”
