Great views of hills and valleys

-

On Sunday, Cyril Phillips led the Carmarthen Ramblers group on a seven-mile walk starting at the parking area for Garn Goch Hillfort.

They took a footpath uphill, first passing the standing stone commemorating Gwynfor Evans, the first Plaid Cymru MP. Next they walked across the site of two iron age hill forts - first Y Gaer Fach, a smaller hillfort, before ascending Y Gaer Fawr a major hill fort where they stopped to admire excellent views of the Towy Valley.

There is evidence that the massive stone rampart around this fort was 30 feet high! Descending the hill from the hillforts, they came to a clearing at 11am where they joined the nation for two minutes of silence in honour of the service men and women who have died in past conflicts. They then continued on, using footpaths and quiet lanes, and paused where Cyril told them about the remains of a nearby Roman villa. They then took a track which led them uphill, until they reached the last high point of today’s walk where they stopped to enjoy lunch with a great view. After lunch they had a steady descent through forestry and fields where they found some interesting fungi growing. The descent then continued on a quiet lane back to their starting point.
