Runaway cow puts OAP in hospital

A PENSIONER has been airlifted to hospital after being trampled by a runaway cow and seriously injured, police have said.

The animal was described as being “dangerously out of control” after escaping from Whitland Mart in Carmarthenshire on Saturday morning.

Dyfed-powys Police said the animal ran off from the market and ran towards the centre of the village. A statement from the force said: “It came across an elderly man in North Road, where it attacked and trampled him, causing serious injury.”

The man was airlifted to the University Hospital of Wales in Cardiff for emergency treatment. Police say that the cow then ran on to a railway track in the area and trains had to be put on stop to “mitigate the danger”.

The cow eventually made it to a field, where police say “every effort was made to safely contain it” with the owner. All attempts failed, and the animal was humanely killed with the consent of the owner because of the “danger” posed by the animal.

The Health and Safety Executive has been informed.
