Town pupils ‘try’ something new... singing to a packed house during the Wales Autumn Series
PUPILS from Johnstown Primary School in Carmarthen have taken part in a special Welsh Rugby Union (WRU) project that saw them sing at the Principality Stadium in Cardiff during one of Wales’s autumn international matches.
WRU ran a schools choir competition, which was open to all primary schools in Wales.
There was a list of three songs, from which the school was required to choose and learn one of the pieces and send in a video entry.
Four winning schools were selected to perform at half-time at the home games of the autumn international series – one choir per week.
Johnstown Primary School was thrilled to have been chosen to perform at the game against Georgia and performed a Welsh rugby fans’ favourite, Sosban Fach.
Come the big day, the WRU created a special experience for the children, each of them received a T-shirt, snacks and water, all in addition to providing a bus to Cardiff, tickets, and the experience of walking on to the famous pitch and performing.
After the half-time whistle blew, children lined up on the pitch, all mic’d up with the cameras running.
They were interviewed briefly before starting to sing, with their performance being shown on the big screens at either end of the stadium.
The pupils were also given special beanie hats embroidered with ‘Wales v Georgia 2022’.
Deputy head teacher at Johnstown, Laura Reynolds, said: “We were honoured to be chosen to perform at one of our home nation’s games. The experience for pupils was invaluable and we are looking forward to entering the competition again next year.”
Pupil Leonie Simpson said: “I thought sitting in the front row at the fireworks was brilliant, but that was nothing compared to being in the stadium.”
Fellow pupil Sailor Evans added: “I feel really proud of what we have achieved together.”
