The eagerly-awaited opening of the new venue, Iktus Ruffaud, happened on the 10th March, but before then there was a chance for a few friends and people in the trade to try the venue out for themselves. Amongst the guests were teams from Spain, France and Portugal. Additonally, Steve and Joan Briggs, and Bianca Venema from Holland, were also in attendance. It was actually Steve that got the ball rolling with the first fish of the new season, in the shape of a nice mid-20lb mirror – which came as a bit of a surprise and relief to everyone, as the lake had actually been frozen and had only just thawed the day before! Despite the less than hospitable weather, which included cold, wind, snow, rain and hail showers, things got off to a steady start. The water temperature for most of the lake never got above 4°C but still there were 21 beautiful carp landed up to 21kg (46lb). A dozen fell to the Caza Y Pesca team in swim B, including the 20kg-plus fish. Eight fish was the result for the Equipe team in swim J, seven for Fred from Media Carpe in K and two others for Bianca in swim I. With the first of the public trips getting underway there will be plenty of news coming our way in the next few weeks, especially when the weather begins to warms up and the fish start to move more.
