Birthday bash at Gran Canaria goes well

Carpworld - - ECHOES -

Daniel Livesley had planned a trip to Lake Chira, in Gran Canaria, some time ahead, with it being his 40th birthday. Of course he was looking forward to relaxing in the sunshine with a cold beer or two! But the week before, news arrived from Alison Beecham that snow, torrential rain and winds meant it was looking like fishing might not even be possible. Daniel and his friend Paul Harvey started fishing on the Friday night of their arrival. The water level was really down as maintenance on the dam wall was been carried out. Fishing close to the dam wall area meant things were kept simple – rods were cast about four to five rod lengths out in about 10 to 20 feet of water. Particles were boated out and the ever popular Nash Tangerine Dream used as hookbaits (20mm and 18mm). Hooklinks were simple hair rigs and size 4 hooks – nothing complicated was needed for these unpressured fish. Fish were caught every day and night, even though on the Wednesday the winds got up to 80mph! The temperature rarely rose above 14ºc all week – still better than England! Paul Harvey caught the biggest of the week with a lovely scaly mirror of 39lb and added further fish of 32lb, 17lb, 18lb, 16lb (common), 28lb, 16lb, 11lb and a further 16-pounder. Daniel had fish of 28lb, 16lb (common), 14lb, 25lb, 21lb, 24lb, 32lb, 23lb and a 22lb common. An 18 fish total, with nine fish each at an average weight of 22lb, meant that despite the bad weather it was a thoroughly enjoyable week and their thanks went to Carp Gran Canaria for their advice and delicious hot food. On top of the fish landed, there were also five fish dropped. The weather really was quite terrible by Canaries’ standards. Dave Beecham had to cancel two weeks of day trips only managing to get other anglers on the bank the day they left. Dave and Ali had expected them to leave the lake during the bad conditions but it seemed the worse the weather got, the more the fish came on the feed! The Nash Groundhogs stood firm and so the guys stayed put.
