Lucky thirteen at Carplantis
After a very hot and hectic week in Croatia, Steve and Joan Briggs had to leave a couple of days early to head up to Holland for the wedding of Carplantis Lake owners, Koos and Heves Walters. Despite the 16-hour drive they were soon celebrating in style and to show his appreciation, Koos asked Steve and Joan if they would like to stay on for a few days at Carplantis – which the pair eagerly accepted! It was Steve’s ambition to try and catch a 50lb carp from Holland and Carplantis provided perhaps the best opportunity. It was the summer shut down at the lake and so they had the choice of swims, which can be a blessing, and a curse, with no other anglers on the lake. But they decided on the Poseidon swim as they’d not fished it before. The lake did have two automatic feeders operating 24-hours a day so the fish wouldn’t be hungry and so Steve started off steadily with the bait and spread just a few kilos of Scopex Squid boilies around the areas. After a quiet start, Steve got off the mark with an immaculate 41lb 8oz mirror and then the action started to pick up with two more mirrors to 37lb 8oz. Steve moved one rod to a 9ft spot where he’d seen a fish show and, in the evening, a fast run was followed by a long, tough battle. His eyes lit up when he saw it was a big common but he really couldn’t believe it when the scales gave a reading of 51lb 8oz – his longawaited Dutch 50! It meant, of course, that this was the thirteenth country that Steve has now had 50s from! It was a new best weight for the fish known as the Super Moon Common. As Steve increased the baiting, the action increased too and although he only fished for four and a half days in total, he banked a further 14 carp, including another ten 30s, three 40s and, just to prove it was no fluke, the fabulous mirror known as the Fish of Two Halves at 50lb 2oz to complete a brilliant trip.
