Some rain last month brought a welcome change and cooled things down a bit and topped up the lake. This kind of weather makes for great fishing at Topcats and resort owner Shaun Mcnutt simply had to get the rods out for a short session himself, and try for the Arapaima. Well, Shaun only lasted two hours before a storm came in and it forced him to retreat for cover! That being said, he still managed a 200lb beast. He tried again the next day, landing numerous fish over a further three hours fishing, including a 250lb Arapaima, alongside eight Amazon Redtails to 80lb, as well as a mix of Asian Redtails, Pacu and Alligator Gar. It turned out to be a great break, as the staff all came over to the swim and enjoyed a few hours, getting ready for their high season. The following week saw Dave, from Scotland, return with his wife and daughter for their fourth visit. He landed 14 fish on his first day, 23 on his second day and over the following five days, 100 more – finishing the week with 137 fish, including many species that he had not previously caught. The Giant Siamese Carp are his favourite and he landed these to 115lb. All his fish fell to the Scopex Boilies, set-up snowman style. His wife and daughter were more than happy, relaxing by the pool, and just coming over to photo all the fish for him. First time visitors Mark and his son, Aide, arrived for 14 nights – with the 9-day’s fishing ‘special package’. They soon settled into the fishing and had plenty of action with many PBS smashed. The Giant Siamese were really feeding well with both of them landing at least 10 per day. As the evenings drew in, the Amazon Redtails started feeding well too. They managed double hook-ups, lots of times, and felt very much at home during their stay at Topcats. On their days off they went for a wander around Koh Samui, taking in the sights and trying various other activities, including the shooting ranges.
