A FIFE-WIDE care charity is celebrating its 25th anniversary by being named as a finalist for this year’s Scottish Charity Awards.

Fife Young Carers has been shortlisted in the Charity of the Year (over 500,000 turnover) category.

Founded in 1999, the charity provides tailored support to more than a thousand young carers across Fife.

It works to help young carers grow in confidence and work towards having aspirations for the future.

Speaking to the Press, a spokesperson for Fife Young Carers outlined the vital work they do for their communities.

The spokesperson said: “Young carers face life changing social, educational and mental health challenges due to their unpaid care of loved ones.

“Fife Young Carers provide tailored support to more than a thousand young carers, to help them overcome barriers and achieve their life’s dream.

“With out holistic support young carers aged from just five years old say they feel more positive about their future, more confident and better able to cope.”

As a reward for their work, Fife Young Carers has now made the shortlist of the Scottish Charity Awards, run annually by the Scottish Council for Voluntary Organisations.

This places them alongside the very best volunteering groups the country has to offer, and will see them face off tough competition to win their category.

Fife Young Carers will now be put into the final, which will be held at the Raddison Blu in Glasgow on Thursday, June 20.

Members of the public can have their say with the People’s Choice Award, voting for which closes on Friday, May 24 at 5pm.

Harvey Carruthers, CEO of Fife Young Carers, added: “Fife Young Carers are delighted to be shortlisted as Charity of the Year.

“We dedicate this to all the young people in Fife and elsewhere in Scotland who provide vital unpaid care to loved ones, often unaware that they are a young carer, and that support is available to them should they wish it.”

The charity has recently been celebrating its 25th birthday and have moved to bigger premises in Glenrothes.

They held celebratory events including an education conference and a gala day attended by hundreds of young carers and their families.

One young carer, who receives support through the service, commented: “Being supported by Fife Young Carers has changed my life as it’s helped me make better choices and I know where to go if I need anyone.”
