Ido like a good mystery – and I know most of you do, too.

While doing some research recently I came across an interesting piece of literature, and I had to share it with you all.

Imagine that you’re working on a construction site, hammering away at some huge block of stone.

Suddenly it splits asunder, revealing a small cavity… only there is something inside it – a live toad!

trapped

Sounds like a made-up story, right? This actually happened right here in the UK – in Hartlepool, to be precise, around the mid-1800s. But how could this be? Well, it’s a mystery for sure, but not the only incident of this sort to be documented. And it’s not only toads! Back in the early half of the 19th century, a stonemason was working on a chunk of rock, when it too split to reveal a cavity. Inside was a small lizard, looking

remarkably fresh. Its eyes shone brightly, its skin was fairly supple.

Within five minutes, the lizard began to breathe, and in no time was running about like a mad thing, possessed.

Turtles. Strange creatures, in my opinion. But not usually as strange as the one found

alive, buried in a concrete floor in Texas 1975. The floor had been laid almost a year prior to the discovery of the turtle… so how was it able to survive?

A story from 1803 reported that a mouse had been found alive inside a boulder… though rather annoyingly it escaped before anyone had the chance to examine it.

real or fake? But could some of these stories simply be hoaxes?

It’s possible, but others stand out from the crowd when it comes to being faked.

For such an example, we need to hop over the Channel, to France.

In 1856, French workmen were bashing and smashing

their way through a tunnel construction for a railway. Suddenly part of the wall crumbled away, and out fell what was later described as a fullblown, living Pterodactyl!

prehistoric Recounted as having a wingspan of more than 10ft, with black leathery skin and a toothed mouth, the creature flapped and clumsily stumbled about for a few moments.

Then, making a hideous screeching, gurgling sound, it abruptly died, just like that.

For a while, the story did the rounds, and caused quite a stir with the public.

Although nowadays, it’s blatantly obvious that it was just a hoax.

There are literally dozens of such tales of animals being found in rocks, or totally entombed in the trunk of a tree.

One thing to remember, though. If you happen to find your own frog or toad in a block of stone, and it doesn’t move within the first five minutes or so, you can be certain that it has indeed croaked!

It flapped and stumbled, then died Buried alive in concrete.. .
