PERFECT PET Dear Jackie

M y three-year-old guinea pig Cuthbert has passed away. Does he realise how truly special he was? Katie, Cornwall

Dear Katie

Cuthbert comes straight through in spirit and he’s still as lively as he was when he was with you. He’s very selfassured and declares that he wasn’t afraid of anything! He would ‘scoot’ about everywhere and climbed up onto things. ‘Mr Agile’ he calls himself. He says he adored sitting on your lap and being petted. And would play you up by getting into places he shouldn’t, like behind the TV.

I feel his passing was connected to respiratory issues but he’s immensely proud that he showed the vets he was a super boy. He really does know how special he was.

He shows me another guinea pig, who is rather fluffy and ‘porky’ apparently! He mentions Daisy. He indicates something to do with her back legs. He’s definitely got plenty of company in spirit.

He shows me that you have been looking at other guinea pigs. Black and white seems to be their colour. He says please do not worry as he knows you are not replacing him. He simply says, ‘I’m one of a long line of them.’ He thanks you and says you were the best mum in the world.

Katie says:

Cuthbert really was a live wire and he showed no fear of anything. He was so funny and got into all sorts of places he shouldn’t. We did have to block off the TV area from him! I loved the way he’d climb up to be with me. I miss petting him – he was such a sweet and affectionate boy. He died due to an infection in his upper respiratory tract that did not respond to treatment. He was such a character at the vets too – they even commented how amazing he was. He really had shown them how clever and funny guinea pigs can be and I am really very proud of him for that. The fluffy guinea pig he mentions was ‘rather porky’ and has passed over, as has Daisy. She was my very first one and sadly she became paralysed. I am so glad he’s met up with them. I had been looking at a pair of guinea pigs, both dark with a white stripe on their faces. I’ve now got them! Cuthbert is irreplaceable – a real one-off. I thank him for telling me not to worry. To him I may have been the best mum in the world. It was easy to be because he was such a special, special boy.
