MUTANT SHARKS

-

It sounds like the plot to a horror film, but apparently mutant sharks are living and breeding inside a volcano – which could erupt at any moment! The hammerhead sharks and rays were found to be drifting inside Kavachi, a live underwater volcano off the coast of New Guinea. The volcano is very active – it last erupted in 2014 – and spews acid, which makes the waters inhospitable to living species. Yet the sharks and rays appear to be very happy and are in fact, thriving. Ocean engineer Brennan Phillips told National Geographic: ‘The idea of there being large animals like sharks hanging out and living inside the caldera of this volcano conflicts with what we know about Kavachi, which is that it erupts….they’re living in a place where they could “die at any moment,” so how do they survive?’ Scientists believe the fearless sharks must have mutated in order to live there in such inhospitable and challenging conditions. Forget horror films - looks like Jaws IV could soon be an actual reality!
