Swan maiden

-

In Mongolian folklore, the strongest hunting tribes trace their origins back to the mythical swan mother - a maiden, captured by one of the first hunters who lived as his wife and bore him 11 children. He held her captive by hiding her feathered swan skin. After many years, she asked to see it one last time. Believing that she would never leave, he revealed its hiding place and she quickly slipped it on and flew to the heavens. While this might not be the actions of a devoted mother, the Swan Maiden was referred to as the ‘First Mother’, and many Siberian tribes still consider it a sin to kill a swan because of this.
