Getting there
The Integratron is in the heart of the Mojave Desert. The easiest way to get there is by car, it’s about an hour’s drive from Palm Springs and around three hours from Los Angeles.
Staying there
An hour’s sound bath at the Integratron costs £29 ($35) from integratron.com and while it doesn’t offer accommodation, there are plenty of options nearby.
Try the Pioneertown Motel, a half-hour drive away. Pioneertown was built as a film set by actor Roy Rogers back in 1946 in the San Bernardino High Desert. The town’s original motel – built to house the actors – has since become a hip boutique bolthole for cool Californians.
Nip next door to Pappy & Harriets for American comfort food and live music. Rooms from £136 ($165) a night. pioneertown-motel.com
What to do
Don’t miss a trip to Giant Rock in
Landers. This huge pebble covers an area of nearly 6,000 square-feet, is seven storeys high, and claims to be the largest freestanding boulder in the world. While it’s been a Native American spiritual site for thousands of years, it also has a curious recent history when old eccentric, Frank Critzer built an underground home beneath the rock in the 1950s and his good friend, Van Tassel would use it to host UFO conventions. For a bit of rock history, swing by the Harmony Motel in Twentynine Palms, just moments from the entrance to the Joshua Tree National Park. It’s famous as the roadside motel U2 stayed in while they worked on their seminal album, Joshua Tree.
Where to eat
Come back down to earth with some inventive Californian dishes at La Copine, a hip restaurant in an old desert diner in Flamingo Heights, a 10-minute drive from the Integratron. It serves a host of treats from mushroom toast with hen-of-the-forest mushrooms, tarragon and fromage blanc to crispy blackened chicken thighs with spicy honey and griddled green tomatoes.check out lacopinekitchen.com
