Baleful beasts

The Black Dog of Bouley Bay has been ravaging the north coast of the island for centuries - a sighting of the ravening beast with huge saucer-like eyes is said to precede a storm. The bay, with its many caves, was a favourite of smugglers, and some believe that the dog was actually a puppet or mask used to keep locals away while illicit goods were being unloaded. Another legendary beast is the Bull of St Clement, which makes a roaring noise at high tide, scaring parishioners. The noise is now believed to come from water gushing into a rock formation and amplified by a cave.
