I’d love to know why I’m deaf and have a bad back. I’ve been told by a past life expert that it’s the first incarnation where I’ve suffered from both. Eileen, 47, Basingstoke, Hampshire.
Thick smoke
It’s 1871, the middle of the night, and disaster is about to befall you. You’re asleep in your bed as thick smoke billows under the door. You and your husband Edmund have been lulled into a deep sleep by the fumes. You don’t hear the cries of your children awake in their beds, further down the hallway, where they cower, too scared to move.
Rescue effort
Suddenly you feel Edmund’s hands on you, shaking you. You try to open your eyes, to wake up, hearing his coughing and choking. Then heat rouses you just enough to open your eyes, and you see Edmund opening the bedroom door, and flames pour in, filling the room with unbearable heat. Edmund runs back to the bed, his nightclothes smouldering, he grabs you and drags you to the window.
Chucked out
Now you can hear the cries of your children as they scream for ‘Mamma!’ You try to scream back, to stop Edmund and make him leave you to save them, and cry out to your children, but the breath staggers in your throat and no sound but choking comes out. Edmund’s hair is catching light. But still he throws open the window, and with his last strength, tosses you out into the night. Edmund’s screams carry on. The children still scream. It’s the last thing you hear.
Broken back
Sadly, Edmund’s efforts don’t save you. Your back is broken as you hit the ground, and you lie there, the darkness coming in, the blessed silence forming around you. Silence.
