The French revolutionary and leader Napoleon may have thought he was a reincarnation of the great Roman Emperor Charlemagne. He was convinced it was his destiny to rule over the Roman Empire, and adopted the Roman eagle as the national symbol. In 1809, he told papal representatives, ‘Take a good look at me. In me you see Charlemagne. Je suis Charlemagne, moi! Oui, je suis Charlemagne!’
