In Celtic mythology, the Daonine Sidhe are the fae folk who were defeated by the Milesians or Gaels in an epic battle. The Gaels wanted all of Ireland for themselves, and drove the fairies underground. The many mounds dotted around Ireland are thought to be the entrances to their underground fairy kingdom.

Living my life’s purpose

Tens of thousands of pilgrims and tourists flock to Rennes-le-château in the foothills of the Pyrenees every year. This little hilltop village has long been steeped in legend, but became famous after the publication of by Michael Baigent, Richard Leigh and Henry Lincoln, which in turn influenced Dan Brown’s The Da Vinci Code. In the late 19th century, a priest called Bérenger Saunière renovated the village church of St Mary Magdalene – and became very rich very quickly. It is rumoured that he unearthed various treasures at Rennes-le-château, including the marriage certificate of Jesus and Mary Magdalene. This was alleged to be a secret of the Priory of Sion, which was said to have links to the village, and some say Saunière’s wealth came from bribing the Vatican. Historians scoff at most of it, but many Grail conspirators claim that something of holy importance was found and buried by Saunière; others believe great riches to be concealed under the church, but so far excavations have not unearthed anything.

The Cathars were a group of Christian radicals that lived in the Languedoc between the 11th and 14th centuries. The Catholic Church was not impressed by their belief system and practices, which included eating a vegetarian diet. Pope Innocent III ordered a crusade against them, which involved storming the fortified Cathar castles that were built on high rocky outcrops. The final push was the nine month-long attack of the stronghold at Montségur, during which one of the Cathars is alleged to have escaped with a sacred item. Some believe that this was a Gnostic gospel, of which the Catholic Church disapproved.

In many ways, Samhain represents sunset in the annual calendar – and as the Celts believed that sunset was the start of the new day, many modern pagans and witches treat Samhain as their New Year’s Eve.
