Haunted Britain: Guy Cliffe’s House, Warwick

-

THE HAUNTING:

Guy’s Cliffe House derives its name from the legendary Guy of Warwick, a Robin Hood-type hero who’s said to have ridden round the country on a monstrous beast called the Dun Cow. The 18th century Gothic mansion has fallen into ruins, but the estate still includes stables, a church, and underground wine cellars. It’s had many uses – a hospital in World War One, a school for orphaned children in World War Two, a pub and a riding school. The old church is currently used as a Masonic Temple. As well as poltergeist activity, there are reports of a spectral dog and his owner standing watch at the door of the church, and a couple of mischievous brewers are said to move the tables with unseen hands to terrify visitors. Our resident ghost hunter, stand-up comedian Barry Dodds, was dispatched to try and uncover the truth behind the hauntings. He’s the first person in almost a decade to be granted special access to the oubliette, a prison deep below the floor in which people were sent to simply disappear...
