GYPSY GHOST

-

Pinnocks Bridge is the place where the ghost of the Gypsy Woman can be seen. Legend has it that Abigail Nicholas used to sell watercress from the stream, while smoking her clay pipe and drinking spirits.

One day she accidentally set fire to her alcohol-drenched clothes with her pipe. They ignited immediately. Some say she threw herself into the stream, others that she died in agony in a ball of fire.

‘The Watercress Lady’ as she is also known, now appears as a ghastly green glow over the water. Sightings of her have been attributed to physical phenomena, such as car-light reflections and the mists which naturally occurring over water, but locals swear that the ‘Watercress Lady’ is real.
