MAGICAL HIERARCHY
Priests were the main practitioners of magic, and they were regarded with great reverence. They were regularly called upon to use magic for healing, to communicate with the dead, and to conduct spells.
Although all priests could perform magic, at the top of the hierarchy were the special ‘magician-priests’ known as ‘lector priests.’ They were highly educated and could read the books of magic kept in libraries and temples. They’d perform magic rituals to assist the king and to help the dead re-birth.
Under them came the ‘scorpion charmers’ who’d use magic to rid an area of poisonous reptiles and insects. And beneath them were the midwives, who’d use magic to help women give birth, and the local wise men and women who might be consulted about issues such as curses and unwanted hauntings.
