Deadly duel

In Greek mythology, Arachne was a talented mortal weaver who challenged Athena, goddess of wisdom and crafts, to a weaving duel. Arachne won - which angered Athena so much that she smashed Arachne’s loom and cursed her to feel forever guilty. Arachne hanged herself, and Athena took pity on her, transforming her into a spider. From this myth, we derive the term ‘arachnid,’ which is used to describe the whole family of spiders.
