Stain of death
A woman called Margaret Schilling was a patient at Athens Insane Asylum in Ohio, USA. In December 1978, Margaret disappeared. Her naked, decomposed body was found six weeks later in an abandoned part of the building. Despite repeated attempts to clean the floor, no amount of scrubbing could get rid of the spooky imprint of her body. The stain, made when her bodily fluids soaked into the concrete, is still there today. After her death, asylum workers claimed to have spotted her spirit, and said she wrote messages on the walls, including ‘I was never crazy’. And her spirit is said to have been spotted peering from the window of the room where she died. Even more sinisterly, a woman who touched the corpse stain is said to have been possessed by Margaret’s spirit and driven to suicide.
