One of the earliest guillotines was known as the Scottish Maiden. Made of oak with an iron blade, it was introduced in 1564, and used to behead people in Edinburgh until 1716. It is now on display in the National Museum of Scotland. The guillotine was last used in France in September 1977 when a man called Hamida Djandoubi was executed for the murder of his ex-girlfriend.
