Coul­ro­pho­bia is the per­sis­tent and ex­treme fear of clowns – and al­though it’s not a com­mon pho­bia like arachno­pho­bia (fear of spi­ders) and claus­tro­pho­bia (fear of en­closed spa­ces), it’s no laugh­ing mat­ter for those af­flicted by it. Killer clowns are a pop­u­lar trope in hor­ror films and fic­tion, from Pen­ny­wise in Stephen King’s IT, to the ter­ri­fy­ing clown doll in 1982 film

Poltergeist, to the ‘killer clown’ craze of 2016, when peo­ple dressed up as clowns to frighten strangers. And, given that clowns have de­monic roots and are steeped in ter­ri­fy­ing folk­lore, it’s no won­der we’re so scared of them…
