1 Beaumaris Castle The last of Edward I’s ‘iron ring’ of 13th-century castles along the North Wales coast is technically groundbreaking, constructed according to an ingenious walls-within-walls plan. It’s a fascinating day out. 2 Special ice creams Stop off at the Red Boat Ice Cream Parlour in Beaumaris for ice cream or sorbet in nostalgic flavours like Jelly Baby or Jammy Dodger. 3 The farmers market On the third Saturday of the month, you can stock up on locally grown veg, newly baked bread and freshly caught crab. 4 Newborough Beach Backed by sand dunes and a forest, this long, sandy beach has plenty of paths for exploring. You see all sorts of birds along the shoreline, and, if you’re lucky, you may even spot red squirrels in the trees. The village of Llanfair PG (look it up to see Britain’s longest village name in full) is close by, so stop off for a photo with the railway station sign. (Tip: Stand well back to get it in!) 5 Ribride Adventure Boat Tours Adrenalin junkies will love the exciting turns and high speeds of an hourlong tour, and adventurous types can opt to charter a rib for the day to explore the area from the water. 6 Plas Cadnant Hidden Gardens A glorious work in progress, the estate was bought by the present owner in 1996, and is regarded as one of North Wales’ bestkept secrets. Don’t miss it!
