2001: child killers masked
On 8 January 2001, the High Court ruled that the identities and whereabouts of the boys who abducted and murdered toddler James Bulger be kept secret for the rest of their lives.
Jon Venables and Robert Thompson, both 10 when they battered James to death, will be protected indefinitely. The decision stemmed from fears of revenge attacks.
