In your jeans Q

There’s a round scaly itchy patch between my belly button and my pubic hair. What is it? Lindsay, Tower Hamlets

A

Often this is a sign of an allergy to nickel in a metal jeans button. Switching from jeans, or covering the inside of the button and using hydrocortisone cream from your chemist should do the trick. If not, check with your GP.

Banish the marks! Q

Is there a cream that works for cellulite? I hate my bum and thighs! Bella, Bedford

A

Cellulite is fat that looks puckered due to being tethered by fibrous strands, and it can run in families.

Most creams don’t offer much, though some containing retinol might help a little after at least six months. Exercise and a healthy weight can help, too.

Sore shoulder Q

My shoulder hurts when I lift my arm to the side. My GP says it’s a painful arc. What’s that? Diane, Ormskirk

A

A tendon, the supraspinatus, helps lift your arm outwards. If it’s damaged or inflamed, it causes pain in the arc of movement as it grates against the bone. Treatment might mean painkillers, a steroid injection, or simply waiting.

Stone situation Q

My scan showed gallstones. I’ve heard they can cause cancer. Should I have them out? Daraja, Loughborough

A

Stones in your gall bladder, under your lower right ribcage, are common.

The risk of cancer is low, especially with small stones. Some doctors might suggest removing your gall bladder for large stones, but generally they’re best left, unless they cause symptoms such as pain.
