On 10 Jan­uary 2003, banned driver Ian Carr (be­low), 27 – who had 89 pre­vi­ous con­vic­tions – ad­mit­ted caus­ing the death of Re­becca Sawyer (right), 6, by dan­ger­ous driv­ing.

Carr also se­ri­ously in­jured her tod­dler sis­ter when he ploughed into their fam­ily’s car in a stolen Vaux­hall As­tra on New Year’s Eve.

The tragedy hap­pened in Ash­ing­ton, Northum­ber­land, two miles from where Carr had over­turned a speed­ing car and left his best friend dy­ing 12 years ear­lier. Carr was jailed for nine and a half years and dis­qual­i­fied for life.
