A quar­ter of par­ents of cur­rent or prospec­tive univer­sity stu­dents have had to (or in­tend to) cut back on lux­ury spend­ing, such as hol­i­days or new cars, to sup­port them while they study, ac­cord­ing to re­search by Which? And 6% have taken, or will have to take, a sec­ond job to help cover the cost.

The study found that just over eight in 10 par­ents of cur­rent stu­dents are sup­port­ing their child fi­nan­cially, and half said that the over­all cost was more than they ex­pected. Par­ents’ con­tri­bu­tions av­er­aged £360 a month, ac­cord­ing to the poll.
