GRAVE ROBBERS STRIKE
Ttwo men slipped into a cemetery by Lake Geneva, Switzerland, one night in March 1978, and dug up the coffin of actor Sir Charlie Chaplin (left), who’d died on Christmas Day 1977, aged 88. Roman Wardas, 24, and Gantscho Ganev, 38, tried to extort a £400,000 ransom from Chaplin’s family, but were caught.
Ganev received an 18month suspended sentence, while Wardas got four and a half years hard labour.
Chaplin’s coffin and body were found that May and reburied in a concrete grave.
