Ttwo men slipped into a ceme­tery by Lake Geneva, Switzer­land, one night in March 1978, and dug up the cof­fin of ac­tor Sir Char­lie Chap­lin (left), who’d died on Christ­mas Day 1977, aged 88. Ro­man War­das, 24, and Gantscho Ganev, 38, tried to ex­tort a £400,000 ran­som from Chap­lin’s fam­ily, but were caught.

Ganev re­ceived an 18month sus­pended sen­tence, while War­das got four and a half years hard labour.

Chap­lin’s cof­fin and body were found that May and re­buried in a con­crete grave.
