Broaching the sex subject...

Chat - - ASK DR MARTIN -

QMy husband had a heart attack six months ago and we haven’t had sex since. Is that normal? Kath, Northfleet

AThere are several possibilities here.

Often people are afraid of triggering another attack. This is unlikely unless he’s been told otherwise by his doctors. Your husband should be back to full physical activity by now, and sex shouldn’t be a problem.

Maybe he’s on medication that interferes with his erection, or which mean he can’t use erection drugs like Viagra. His GP can recommend alternatives.

But also, he might have erection worries, have lost interest in sex or become depressed because his confidence has been knocked by his heart attack.

Encourage him to discuss things with you and his GP.
