Help, my toes are hairy!

-

QI have hairy toes and feel like a freak! Now I’m worried as my friend says it’s a sign of a hormone disorder. Sienna, Kennington

AHairy toes are fairly common and are almost always an inherited tendency, which doesn’t mean anything is wrong.

Very rarely, a hormone problem, such as polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS), can increase levels of testosterone hormone and trigger hair to grow, although in this case you’d probably have hair on your face and body, and possibly other symptoms like irregular periods.

The same applies to other causes, such as drugs, which can trigger hair growth. But chances are it’s just the way you are and is best ignored – though shaving, hair-removal cream or waxing are all safe in that area if you’re fed up with people commenting! A permanent fix would mean laser treatment or electrolysis.
