Having a condom crisis
Q
We use condoms but they keep splitting during sex. What are we doing wrong? Nina, Brigg
A
Don’t be too hard on yourself, splitting can occur. But it does mean the condom failed on that occasion and you should seek morning-after contraception, and maybe a check for sexually transmitted infection.
Breaking can mean the condom is substandard, a bigger risk if you’ve bought it from unregulated websites and the packet doesn’t carry the BSI Kitemark, or it may be damaged by being used with oil-based lube, stored in the heat, or used beyond its expiry date.
Be careful not to tear it when you open the packet, squeeze the air from the tip before putting it on, and ease friction with a condom-compatible lube.
Your partner might need to experiment with larger sizes.
