My nose is so crusty
Q I keep getting a sore nose with scabs in my nostrils. What’s wrong? Pat, Stranraer
A Many of us carry bacteria called staphylococci inside our noses without any symptoms. But from time to time, these bugs might flare up and cause an infection with pain, redness, boils and sticky crusts. This is called nasal vestibulitis and might appear out of the blue, although often there’s a trigger, such as catching a cold, or damage from plucking nose hairs, picking your nose or even blowing it too hard.
Usually, the infection will settle on its own, although an antibiotic ointment should clear it more quickly. Occasionally, a severe infection might need antibiotics by mouth. Help prevent more attacks by blowing gently and only when necessary, and don’t pick it or pluck nose hairs.
