A BRIGHTER FUTURE

-

An 88year-old woman from London recently became the first person in the UK to receive a bionic eye transplant.

Surgeons implanted a microchip behind her blind left eye. The patient suffered from age-related macular degeneration (AMD), which is a common cause of sight loss. But the operation, which took place this January, restored her sight.

Special video glasses capture images, then relay them back to the chip, then brain, replicating normal vision.

In a statement, the transplant recipient said that she was thrilled to be able to enjoy gardening and painting again.

‘I truly hope that many others will benefit from this, too,’ she said.
