Why won’t my nails grow?
Q My fingernails keep splitting and breaking. Am I lacking in vitamins? Marilyn, Grantham
A It’s unlikely to be caused by a vitamin deficiency so, unless your doctor diagnoses this, I wouldn’t waste your money on supplements.
Splitting or fragile nails are common, and often mean you’re spending too much time with soaked fingers while washing or cleaning. Wear cotton-lined rubber gloves
– or invest in a dishwasher or get someone else to do the washing up!
Try to avoid bleach, cleaning chemicals or other harsh substances such as nail-varnish remover. Cut your nails short, don’t bite them, and wear gloves for heavy work like gardening. Try a nail hardener, too.
If your nails are crumbly, coming away from your fingers, or your toenails are also affected, see your GP to rule out a fungal infection.
