My daughter has changed

-

Q

My 14-year-old struggles with her self-esteem. She used to be so carefree and outgoing, but now she never wants to leave her room.

We’ve always told her how smart and beautiful she is, and encouraged her.

We also monitor her phone and laptop and I’ve not seen anything worrying.

What can we do to help her?

Vanessa, 46

A

Even though your daughter is still young, this could be an early sign of depression.

Have an honest chat with her and let her know that you’re there for her.

Tell her you understand that she’s not feeling so good right now, and ask if there’s anything you can do to help.

Then keep on saying it. She might be a typical teenager and roll her eyes, but it’s important to keep reminding her you’re there for her and trusting that your words will sink in.
