His biceps are bulging!

-

QMy husband felt a sudden pop and pain in his arm. Now there’s a bruise and a bulge! What could it be?

Irie, Morecambe

ADoctors call this the ‘Popeye sign’ as it causes a bulging muscle, like the cartoon sailor! It happens when your biceps muscle, on the inside of your upper arm, snaps at the point where it joins your shoulder. The torn muscle bunches up, forming a lump. The snap can happen out of the blue without much pain, or during lifting when there’s more likely to be a painful ‘pop’ and bruising. It’s more common in men, particularly over the age of 50.

Painkillers, rest and ice will help pain and swelling and often there’s no need for other treatment, as the swelling gets better on its own and muscle strength gradually recovers. But a severe tear, especially in a young person, may need surgery.
