MATE CRIME – WHAT IS IT?
According to learning disability charity Mencap, ‘mate crime’ is when someone claims to be a friend, but does things to take advantage. This could involve pressuring their ‘friend’ to give them money.
Mate crime is more likely to happen to someone with a learning disability, as they may be more easily pressured.
Mate crimes are disability hate crimes, and should be reported to the police. To find out more, visit mencap.org.uk.
