Picnic at hanging stone

Cheshire Life - - Nostalgia -

A picturesque, but slightly hazardous, place for a picnic, seen here in the 1930s, is the Hanging Stone, overlooking Swythamley Hall. An inscription on the rock tells how Burke, a mastiff owned by ‘the Swythamley Squire’ (Sir Philip Lancaster Brocklehurst, one assumes), was buried there in 1874. The name of the faithful dog is further memorialised in the name of Burke’s Special, a brew by Wincle Beer Company.
