Ican, without much deliberation or debate, tell you the best meals I’ve ever eaten. There was the ocean-side Spaghetti Vongole on Italy’s Amalfi Coast after which my now-husband, then-boyfriend proposed. There was the giant pepperoni pizza in New York’s Little Italy; a somehow soft-yetcrispy, tomato-dripping paragon of everything a great pizza should be. The aforementioned husband still goes on about it four years later.
A decade or more before either of those, there was the rack of lamb and triple chocolate dessert in a farmhouse courtyard, down a dirt track in Portugal. My parents, my sister and me. My sister was nearing the end of her teens and it would be one of the last family holidays we’d take together. Now that our father has gone and that family-of-four is no more, it is how I remember our dynamic. Relaxed, content, laughing as the sun set behind the terracotta walls and orange groves beyond.
I don’t think it’s any surprise that my favourite food memories all happened abroad. A great holiday and a great meal have much the same effect on you; your senses are heightened, you’re keen for discovery, you want to savour every delicious moment.
And so it’s appropriate I’d say that both feature in this issue. Firstly, let us take care of the holiday element. We’re blessed by many things in Cheshire; one that I count often is our proximity to the glorious North Wales coastline. Sweeping sands and sparkling waters are just a couple of hours
away. So enjoy this month’s North Wales Special – if, like me, you plan your travels based on what eatery to visit next, you’ll find plenty of inspiration. The area is a gastronomic gold mine. Which is why it deserves a category all of its own in our annual Cheshire Life Food & Drink Awards. In this issue we announce the 30 shortlisted finalists of 2019. Consider it your ultimate guide to the very best places to eat and drink in Cheshire. The winners of each category – as well as a few special, on-the-night accolades, including Chef of the Year – will be announced at our awards ceremony on July 15th. Find out if your favourite won on the night via our social media channels, or better yet, join us (see below for details) at the stunning Nunsmere Hall to eat, drink and celebrate. It’ll be one for the memory box, for sure.
Want to be at the Cheshire Life Food & Drink Awards 2019? There are still a few tickets left to join us at Nunsmere Hall, near Tarporley, on Monday 15th July. You can book yours by contacting firstname.lastname@example.org. The ticket price of £85 plus Vat includes a gin and fizz drinks reception plus a four-course dinner with wine.
