Plant of the Month: Helenium
The sneezeworts have pom-pom-centred daisies with petals as bright as a prairie sunset. Bees adore them as a late-season top-up for nectar and pollen, as if regularly deadheaded they’ll keep blooming long into November. Best in full sun; keep fresh by lifting, dividing and re-planting every few years. It’s worth the work as you’ll want more as they look wonderful in drifts. Look out for the waist-high red ‘Moerhiem Beauty’ and the burnished orange ‘Sahin’s Extra Early Flowerer’ and knee-high ‘Short ‘n Sassy’ (pictured), the best for pots.
