MEAL in a MIN
An easily digestible review
The Old Garages 75 Hawthorn Street Wilmslow, SK9 5EJ theoldgarages.co.uk/
Venue: Contender for Wilmslow’s best restaurant: this tucked-away brunch and cake fixture has morphed into a late-night joint with a growing fanbase. Our verdict? There’s nowhere else like it in the town.
Menu: A short and thoughtfully put-together small plates selection that actually works – everything ties in and the quality of the produce stands out. The burrata came smothered in olive oil and sunflower seeds; we tore up warm flatbreads and dunked them in garlicky houmous and aioli with an extra mouthful of chorizo; and the special of confit duck was crispy in all the right places. I couldn’t quite handle cake for dessert. As for the wine… it’s exceptional. This is definitely one for your (Cheshire) bucket list.
Décor and ambience: An enduringly cool spot with Scandi notes and an industrial vibe: potted cacti, mismatched furniture, ceramic tiles and soaring ceilings.
Service: Down-to-earth yet polished – they really know their stuff.
Cost: Around £70 for a meal for two with a bottle of wine.
